A consortium of major Japanese corporations including SoftBank, NEC, Sony, and Honda have come together to establish a new artificial intelligence venture aimed at developing domestically built AI technologies. The initiative reflects Japan’s strategic push to strengthen its position in the global AI race and reduce reliance on foreign technologies from the United States and China.
The newly formed company, focused on building large-scale foundation AI models, will leverage collaboration across industries to accelerate innovation. SoftBank and NEC are expected to lead the core development efforts, while Sony and Honda will contribute by integrating AI into consumer electronics, mobility solutions, and industrial applications.
The venture plans to bring together around 100 AI engineers to build advanced AI systems that can be deployed across enterprises. In addition to the founding companies, several major industrial and financial players, including Nippon Steel, Kobe Steel, and leading Japanese banks such as Mitsubishi UFJ, Sumitomo Mitsui, and Mizuho, are also participating in funding the initiative.
A key objective of the partnership is to develop high-performance AI models that can be widely used by Japanese companies. The consortium also aims to expand into “physical AI,” enabling applications such as robotics control and autonomous driving, with Honda expected to apply the technology in mobility solutions.
The venture is likely to seek support from government-backed programs, including initiatives that could provide up to 1 trillion yen in funding for domestic AI development over the coming years. This collaboration highlights a broader national effort to build a self-reliant AI ecosystem and ensure that Japan remains competitive in the rapidly evolving global technology landscape.
