Sam Altman’s World Partners with Zoom to Tackle Deepfake Threats in Video Meetings

Sam Altman-backed digital identity project World has announced a new partnership with Zoom aimed at addressing the growing threat of deepfake fraud in virtual meetings. The collaboration introduces advanced human verification tools designed to ensure that participants in video calls are real individuals and not AI-generated impersonations, reflecting rising concerns around identity security in the age of artificial intelligence.

The initiative comes amid a surge in deepfake-related cyber fraud, including a widely reported 2024 case in which engineering firm Arup lost $25 million after employees were deceived during a video call involving AI-generated impersonations. As such incidents become more frequent, companies are increasingly seeking reliable methods to verify identities in real-time digital interactions.

At the core of the partnership is World’s “Deep Face” technology, which uses a multi-layered verification process to confirm a user’s identity. The system cross-references data from a previously registered biometric profile, a real-time facial scan, and live video input during a meeting. Only when all three elements match does the system assign a “Verified Human” badge to the participant, providing visual assurance to others on the call.

Zoom plans to integrate these verification features directly into its platform, allowing meeting hosts to require identity checks before participants can join. Users may also request identity verification during ongoing calls, adding an extra layer of trust in sensitive business interactions. This approach marks a shift from traditional deepfake detection methods, which rely on analyzing video inconsistencies and are becoming less effective as AI-generated content improves.

The partnership is part of World’s broader push to establish a global “proof of human” system across digital platforms. Alongside Zoom, the company is expanding integrations with services like Tinder and Docusign, aiming to create a standardized identity layer for the internet. As AI-generated content continues to grow rapidly, such verification systems are expected to play a crucial role in maintaining trust and security in online ecosystems.
