Meta raises 2026 capital expenditure outlook to $145 billion to accelerate AI push

Meta Platforms has increased its capital expenditure forecast for 2026 to between $125 billion and $145 billion, underscoring its aggressive commitment to artificial intelligence infrastructure and next-generation computing capabilities. The revised outlook represents a significant jump from its earlier guidance and signals the company’s intention to scale its AI ambitions at an unprecedented pace.

The bulk of this increased spending will be directed toward building and expanding data centers, acquiring high-performance chips, and strengthening computing infrastructure required to train and deploy advanced AI models. As demand for AI-powered services continues to surge, Meta is prioritizing long-term capacity over short-term profitability, positioning itself as a key player in the global AI race.

The announcement comes alongside strong financial performance, with the company reporting robust revenue growth driven by its core advertising business. However, despite beating expectations, Meta’s stock declined following the news, reflecting investor concerns over the scale of spending and its impact on near-term cash flow and margins.

Meta’s leadership, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has emphasized that the increased investment is essential to support future AI-driven products and services, including advanced models, personalized AI agents, and improved ad targeting systems. The company believes that building large-scale infrastructure now will enable it to unlock significant long-term value and maintain a competitive edge against rivals.

The move highlights a broader industry trend where major technology companies are significantly ramping up spending on AI infrastructure. As competition intensifies, Meta’s decision to scale capital investment reflects a strategic shift toward becoming a leader in AI innovation, even as it navigates investor concerns and rising operational costs in the short term.
