
Chinese technology giant Alibaba is preparing to integrate its AI platform Qwen with its e-commerce marketplace Taobao, marking a major step toward conversational and AI-driven online shopping. The move is designed to shift users away from traditional keyword searches and toward interactive shopping experiences powered by artificial intelligence.
Under the new system, consumers will reportedly be able to browse, compare, and purchase products simply by chatting with the Qwen AI assistant. The integration will allow the AI platform to access Taobao and Tmall’s catalog of more than four billion products, enabling personalized recommendations based on user preferences, shopping history, and behavior patterns. Analysts believe the feature could significantly change how consumers interact with online marketplaces in China.
Alibaba is also expected to introduce a Qwen-powered shopping assistant directly inside Taobao. The assistant will reportedly include advanced tools such as virtual try-ons, intelligent product comparisons, and 30-day price tracking features. The company aims to create a more seamless shopping experience where users can complete the entire purchase journey — from discovery to payment and post-sales support — through a conversational AI interface.
The initiative reflects Alibaba’s broader push into what industry experts describe as “agentic commerce,” where AI agents actively assist consumers in decision-making and transaction execution. Unlike conventional e-commerce systems that depend heavily on search bars and manual browsing, AI-driven shopping platforms are being designed to understand natural language requests and automate multiple shopping tasks. Reports indicate Alibaba has already connected Qwen with services including Alipay, food delivery platforms, and travel booking systems as part of a larger AI ecosystem strategy.
Industry observers view the integration as one of the most ambitious AI-commerce projects launched by a major technology company. China’s e-commerce sector has become a global testing ground for AI-powered retail innovation, with firms aggressively embedding generative AI into consumer applications. Experts believe Alibaba’s move could intensify competition among Chinese technology companies racing to build AI-native digital ecosystems that combine shopping, payments, logistics, and services into unified conversational platforms.
