ByteDance in Talks with Iluvatar CoreX for AI Chip Supply as It Expands Domestic Sourcing Strategy

Chinese technology giant ByteDance is reportedly in talks with Shanghai-based Iluvatar CoreX to acquire artificial intelligence chips for inference workloads, as the company looks to expand its network of Chinese AI chip suppliers. The potential deal would further diversify ByteDance’s AI hardware sourcing strategy amid growing demand for computing power to support generative AI applications and large-scale model deployment.

According to sources familiar with the matter, ByteDance is exploring the purchase of at least 50,000 AI chips from Iluvatar CoreX. The chips are expected to be used primarily for inference tasks, which involve running trained AI models to generate outputs and support real-world applications. The discussions highlight the growing importance of domestic semiconductor suppliers within China’s rapidly evolving artificial intelligence ecosystem.

If finalized, the agreement would make Iluvatar CoreX ByteDance’s third major domestic graphics processing unit (GPU) supplier, joining Huawei and Cambricon among the company’s key technology partners. The move reflects a broader industry trend in which Chinese technology companies are increasingly turning to local chip manufacturers to meet expanding AI computing requirements.

In addition to the ongoing discussions with Iluvatar CoreX, ByteDance is also evaluating the possibility of using AI chips developed by Baidu’s semiconductor unit, Kunlunxin. The consideration of multiple suppliers underscores the company’s strategy of building a diversified and resilient AI hardware ecosystem capable of supporting future growth.

The growing demand for AI infrastructure has intensified competition among Chinese chipmakers seeking to secure contracts with major technology firms. As companies continue investing heavily in artificial intelligence, access to reliable computing resources has become a critical factor in scaling AI services, training models, and supporting inference operations.

ByteDance’s latest discussions demonstrate the increasing role of domestic semiconductor providers in supporting China’s AI ambitions and reducing dependence on external technology sources. The company has emerged as one of the most active investors in AI development, requiring substantial computing capacity to power its expanding portfolio of artificial intelligence products and services.

While negotiations remain ongoing and no final agreement has been announced, the potential deal highlights the strategic importance of AI chips within the technology sector. As demand for advanced computing resources continues to accelerate, partnerships between leading technology companies and domestic chipmakers are expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of the AI industry.
