Meta has paused an internal employee activity monitoring program as the company investigates data security concerns linked to the initiative, according to a Reuters report.
The program, known internally as the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), was introduced in April to collect employee mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes from US-based staff systems for AI model training purposes.
The decision to temporarily halt the program follows internal concerns that sensitive employee information connected to the monitoring system may have been accessible to a broader group of employees within the company. Reuters reported that the exposed information allegedly included prompts, transcriptions, private conversations, performance-related information, and internal sensitivity ratings.
Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton confirmed the company is investigating the matter and stated that the program was designed with privacy safeguards. The company said there is currently no indication that the data was improperly accessed by employees, but the initiative is being paused while the review is underway.
According to Reuters, the internal review was triggered after an employee filed a high-priority security incident report highlighting concerns around employee data exposure. Internal discussions reportedly raised questions regarding the handling of personal and sensitive information accessed through work systems.
Reuters had earlier reported in May that the program was collecting broader categories of employee activity data than initially described and that some information was being stored in unencrypted form, prompting privacy-related concerns among staff members.
Meta has not specified how long the pause will remain in effect. The company stated that the suspension process is being rolled out internally and may take time to fully implement across systems.
