India — Tamil Nadu’s V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VoCPA) in Thoothukudi has launched PortGPT, an AI-powered mobile application built on BharatGPT, becoming the first major port in India to deploy an enterprise generative AI platform through a mobile application.
The platform was developed by Sahana System Limited using CoRover’s BharatGPT infrastructure and was officially launched by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal in New Delhi.
PortGPT is designed to support digital transformation across port operations by enabling AI-driven access to information, operational assistance, and intelligent digital services for stakeholders within the maritime and logistics ecosystem.
The initiative reflects the increasing adoption of indigenous artificial intelligence platforms across critical infrastructure and government-linked sectors as India accelerates deployment of sovereign AI technologies and digital public infrastructure.
According to the report, renewable energy now offsets nearly 94% of the port’s total energy consumption, while net carbon emissions have declined by approximately 45%. The port also reported nearly a 50% reduction in carbon intensity per tonne of cargo handled over the past four years.
In addition, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority signed a memorandum of understanding with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya to collaborate on maritime research, logistics education, skill development, and the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Maritime Logistics and Port Management.
Industry experts believe the deployment of AI-powered digital platforms alongside sustainability initiatives highlights the growing transformation of India’s ports into technology-driven, data-centric, and environmentally sustainable logistics hubs.
