United States — Microsoft has announced a fresh round of workforce reductions affecting approximately 4,800 employees, or about 2.1% of its global workforce, alongside a major restructuring of its Xbox gaming business as the company continues to streamline operations and prioritize long-term strategic investments.
The restructuring includes approximately 3,200 positions within Microsoft’s gaming division, with around 1,600 roles eliminated immediately and additional reductions expected during the current fiscal year. As part of the overhaul, Microsoft is also planning to divest up to five game studios as it reshapes its gaming portfolio.
The changes form part of Microsoft’s broader efforts to optimize its organizational structure while continuing investments in artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, and high-growth technology businesses.
In an internal communication, Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said, “The roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI,” emphasizing that the layoffs are part of organizational restructuring rather than direct AI-driven job replacement.
The restructuring also reflects Microsoft’s evolving Xbox strategy, with the company increasingly focusing on expanding game availability across multiple platforms instead of relying primarily on console-exclusive titles. The shift aligns with Microsoft’s broader gaming strategy following its recent acquisitions and continued investment in gaming content, cloud gaming, and subscription services.
The announcement comes as Microsoft continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, including data centres, AI platforms, and cloud computing capabilities. Industry analysts have noted that major technology companies are balancing significant AI investments with ongoing cost optimization and operational efficiency measures across their businesses.
Microsoft’s shares declined approximately 1.4% following the announcement. The company has also outlined substantial capital expenditure plans for AI infrastructure during 2026 as it continues expanding Azure AI, Copilot, and enterprise AI offerings.
Microsoft is one of the world’s largest technology companies, providing cloud computing, artificial intelligence, enterprise software, productivity solutions, gaming platforms, and cybersecurity services. The company continues to invest in AI infrastructure, cloud services, gaming, and enterprise technologies while expanding its global digital ecosystem.
