
The central government has begun evaluating data centre policies across 15 states after a fire at a New Delhi data centre owned by ST Telemedia and Tata Communications exposed operational and recovery risks in one of India’s fastest-growing digital infrastructure sectors. The review is aimed at strengthening safety regulations and identifying gaps between international deployment standards and domestic practices. The incident reportedly caused extensive damage to parts of the site and complicated data recovery, prompting stakeholder meetings and a broader policy review exercise.
India does not yet have a single national data centre policy, leaving state-level frameworks to shape much of the operating environment for data centre developers, operators and customers. That structure has helped states compete for investment through incentives, land access, power arrangements and faster approvals, but it has also created unevenness in safety, resilience and operational requirements. Officials are now studying state policies to identify triggers for such accidents and determine whether policy gaps need to be addressed through advisories to state governments and private-sector operators.
Industry participants have pointed to global certifications such as Uptime and TIA-942 as potential baselines for additional guidelines where needed. Nasscom has suggested a tiered, risk-based assessment model for data centres, an approach that would recognise differences in facility size, workload criticality, redundancy design, power density and customer exposure. That direction would be especially relevant as AI workloads drive higher rack densities, expanded electrical infrastructure, greater cooling demand and more complex fire-suppression needs.
The review comes as India’s data centre market is absorbing demand from cloud computing, AI model deployment, financial services, public-sector digitisation, telecom networks and data-localisation requirements. AI infrastructure adds a further layer of risk because GPU-heavy deployments require higher power density and stricter thermal management than many conventional enterprise workloads. The Delhi incident has therefore become more than a site-specific safety matter; it is now tied to the operating rules for a sector expected to support sovereign cloud, enterprise AI and hyperscale expansion.
For data centre operators, the immediate impact is likely to be closer scrutiny of fire suppression, electrical design, redundancy, disaster recovery, backup processes, risk certification and incident-response protocols. For enterprise and public-sector customers, the review could sharpen procurement expectations around resilience, recoverability and auditability. The government’s next steps will depend on what it finds in existing state policies and whether it chooses to recommend common minimum standards across jurisdictions.
