Amaravati to Get India’s First Dedicated Quantum and AI University Campus

Amaravati is set to get India’s first dedicated university campus focused on Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence, after the Andhra Pradesh government approved the establishment of a NIELIT campus in the state capital. The project is part of Andhra Pradesh’s broader effort to build a deep-tech ecosystem around quantum computing, artificial intelligence, semiconductors and related technologies.

The ₹730.7 crore campus will be established by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), which operates under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. The campus will spread across 8.5 acres and will be funded through a grant from MeitY.

Classes are expected to begin from September 2026 at a temporary facility at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur, before the programmes move to the permanent campus in Amaravati. The university is expected to offer programmes covering a broad range of emerging technologies, including quantum computing and communication, artificial intelligence and machine learning, semiconductor fabrication, chip design, VLSI, embedded systems and high-performance computing.

A major component of the project will be a 1.25 lakh sq ft Quantum Research, Innovation & Incubation Block. The facility is planned to include quantum computing and photonics infrastructure, cleanroom and nano-fabrication facilities, semiconductor and chip-design laboratories, data centres and dedicated spaces for startup incubation.

The university is expected to have a significant focus on developing skilled talent for India’s emerging deep-tech sectors. The project aims to train around 8,250 learners over a five-year period, including approximately 1,650 students through degree programmes and 6,600 learners through skilling and certification programmes.

The university project forms part of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s broader Amaravati Quantum Valley initiative, which seeks to position the capital as a major centre for quantum technology and innovation. The state has previously announced several initiatives aimed at developing quantum computing infrastructure and strengthening the technology ecosystem in Amaravati.

In April 2026, Andhra Pradesh launched what it described as India’s first indigenously developed, open-access quantum computer test beds, Amaravati 1S and Amaravati 1Q, at SRM University and Medha Towers in Gannavaram. These initiatives are intended to provide infrastructure for researchers, startups and institutions working on quantum technologies.

The state has also been working with technology companies and academic institutions to build a wider quantum and AI ecosystem. Earlier in June, Andhra Pradesh announced the Amaravati Quantum & AI Innovation Center, developed in association with IBM, with the objective of connecting industry requirements with academic and technology capabilities.

The new university campus adds an education, research and innovation layer to these initiatives. By bringing together academic programmes, research infrastructure, semiconductor facilities, data centres and startup incubation, the project is intended to create a broader pipeline of talent and technology capabilities in emerging fields.

Andhra Pradesh has set an ambitious goal of positioning Amaravati among the world’s top five quantum hubs by 2030. The proposed university is expected to contribute to this objective by developing specialised talent and supporting research and innovation across quantum technologies, AI and semiconductor-related fields.

The initiative also reflects the growing importance of quantum computing, AI and semiconductor technologies to India’s technology strategy. As these fields develop, specialised education, research infrastructure and industry collaboration are becoming increasingly important for building domestic capabilities.

With the approval of the NIELIT campus, Amaravati is moving towards establishing a dedicated institutional base for these technologies. The combination of degree programmes, certification courses, research facilities, semiconductor infrastructure and startup support could provide a platform for students, researchers and emerging technology companies to participate in the development of India’s deep-tech ecosystem.
