OpenAI Targets $30 Billion in New Funding at $1.4 Trillion Valuation

OpenAI is seeking to raise at least $30 billion from investors in a new funding round, with the artificial intelligence company targeting a valuation of around $1.4 trillion, according to people familiar with the matter.

The proposed valuation does not include the money raised in the new round. The fundraising discussions are still at an early stage, and the terms could change, the people said. The demand for the round is being led by investors, according to one person familiar with the discussions. OpenAI declined to comment.

The latest funding plan comes after OpenAI pushed back its plans for an initial public offering. The proposed financing is expected to serve as a bridge round, providing the company with additional capital in place of an IPO.

Bloomberg News previously reported that OpenAI was considering a new funding round at a $1.2 trillion valuation. The latest target of around $1.4 trillion would represent a higher valuation for the company.

OpenAI most recently raised $122 billion in March, at a valuation of $852 billion including the money raised. The March funding round provided the company with significant capital as it continues to invest in artificial intelligence research, infrastructure and product development.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said the company would not go public this year as it focuses on addressing concerns surrounding AI safety. Altman described the timing of an IPO as an “ill-advised moment” for the company.

The company has continued to invest heavily in AI infrastructure and product development while competing with other AI companies for enterprise customers and revenue. OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate has also increased significantly. Reuters reported that the company’s annualized revenue run rate is nearing $70 billion, having risen more than 70 percent since the beginning of the third quarter.

The proposed funding would come as OpenAI continues to expand its product portfolio and compete in the growing market for AI agents. At its developer event in San Francisco on Tuesday, September 29, the company unveiled a new always-on AI agent called Dots.

Dots is designed to handle more complex tasks for users across applications. OpenAI is also expanding its subscription offerings, including a new $500 paid tier with higher usage limits and faster processing speeds.

At the same time, OpenAI has faced increasing scrutiny over AI safety and the potential risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems. The company said this week that it would not release its latest model, GPT-6.1 Astra, after the system did not meet its internal safety standards.

The proposed funding round also comes as OpenAI continues to prepare for the long-term capital requirements associated with developing and deploying advanced AI systems. The company is competing with firms including Anthropic and Meta in areas such as AI models, enterprise applications and autonomous AI agents.

OpenAI’s latest funding discussions remain subject to change because negotiations are still at an early stage. If completed at the targeted level and valuation, the proposed round would provide the company with additional capital following its $122 billion March funding round and would allow it to continue investing while its public-listing plans remain on hold.

The funding discussions were reported on September 29, 2026, with Bloomberg News citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters separately reported the same funding target and valuation, while noting that OpenAI had not immediately responded to its request for comment.
