Data Sensitivity Coverage

Let’s be real: the data security talk still kicks off with the basics “Where’s all my sensitive stuff hiding?”  Sure, that’s step one, and it’s crucial. But it’s not enough anymore. The question every CISO needs to be grilling is this: How much of that data do we actually have locked down? Not theoretically, but in measurable terms.

In most organizations, there is a quiet but dangerous assumption we believe we know where our sensitive data resides. In reality, what we often have is partial visibility at best.

Over the last few years, I’ve seen a consistent pattern across enterprises. We invest in discovery tools, define classification schemas, and roll out encryption standards. Yet, when we try to quantify coverage, the numbers tell a different story. A significant portion of sensitive data whether customer information, financial records, or intellectual property still sits undiscovered in endpoints, shared drives, cloud repositories, and shadow IT environments.

“The Illusion of Knowing”

  • We believe: “We’ve mapped our sensitive data.”
  • Reality: Large chunks sit in forgotten folders, old backups, cloud shares, and shadow IT.
  • Risk: You can’t protect what you don’t even know exists.

Even when discovery improves, labelling does not always keep pace. Business users often bypass classification due to usability concerns, and automated tagging is still evolving in accuracy. The result is a gap between identified and classified data, which directly impacts downstream controls.

Encryption is another area where perception differs from reality. While databases and structured systems are generally well protected, unstructured data, documents, emails, backups remains inconsistently encrypted. Similarly, access controls tend to be role-based in design but overly permissive in execution, especially in collaborative environments.

Monitoring, perhaps the most critical layer, is still reactive in many cases. We generate alerts, but lack context. We log access, but don’t always correlate it with sensitivity. Without this linkage, even the best SOC setups struggle to prioritize what truly matters.

Time for a mindset flip: stop just rolling out controls and start measuring how well they cover everything. CISOs, hit your teams with these pointed questions:

  • What percentage of sensitive data have we actually discovered across all environments?
  • Of that, how much is correctly labelled?
  • How much is encrypted, both at rest and in transit?
  • How tightly is access governed and periodically reviewed?
  • And finally, how much of this data is actively monitored with context-aware intelligence?

Data sensitivity coverage should be treated as a measurable metric, much like vulnerability management or patch compliance. Because at the end of the day, attackers don’t target systems they target data. And any gap in coverage is an opportunity waiting to be exploited.

The goal is not perfection, but clarity. In cybersecurity, risk doesn’t start with threats or tools it starts with assumptions. The less you assume about your data, and the more you can measure, the safer you really are.
