Google Expands Voluntary Exit Programme Across Five Countries Amid AI Spending Push

Google has expanded its voluntary employee buyout programme to several countries as Alphabet looks to manage operating costs while increasing investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.

The company confirmed to Reuters that it began offering voluntary exit packages in June 2026 to employees in selected teams across Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. The latest expansion follows similar programmes introduced in some divisions in the United States and the United Kingdom since 2025.

Google said the programme was initially introduced in certain teams in 2025 and expanded globally to a limited number of countries during the summer of 2026. The company described the initiative as an option for employees who no longer feel aligned with its pace or direction.

The number of employees who accepted the latest round of offers has not been disclosed.

The move comes as Alphabet increases spending on AI infrastructure and shifts resources towards business areas it considers strategic priorities. Google has identified AI and cloud computing as key areas for future hiring, while some employees in these divisions have been excluded from previous voluntary exit programmes.

In Switzerland, where Google employs approximately 5,000 people and operates a major engineering centre in Zurich, the programme covered several divisions but excluded its DeepMind AI unit.

Employees who accepted the offer in Switzerland began leaving in August. Applications were reportedly due by mid-July, and eligible employees received one month’s salary for every year of service, subject to a maximum payment of 12 months’ salary. At least four employees in one team of approximately 50 reportedly accepted the offer.

Google’s latest initiative follows a wider effort by major technology companies to restructure their workforces and control costs while investing heavily in AI. Microsoft also offered voluntary buyouts to a significant number of employees as part of its cost-management efforts.

Alphabet’s workforce has continued to grow in recent quarters, but the company is adjusting its organisational priorities to support areas expected to drive future growth.

The voluntary exit programme gives employees an option to leave with severance benefits while allowing Google to reshape its workforce around its changing business requirements.
