Alibaba has launched Qwen3.8-Max, its largest and most capable artificial-intelligence model to date, as competition among Chinese technology companies intensifies over the development of advanced and cost-efficient AI systems.
The model contains 2.4 trillion parameters—the numerical values an AI system learns during training to recognise patterns, process information and generate responses. Although parameter count alone does not determine a model’s overall capability, it indicates the scale of the computing resources and training data used during development.
Qwen3.8-Max uses a mixture-of-experts architecture designed to reduce the computational resources required for each request. While the model has 2.4 trillion total parameters, it activates approximately 95 billion parameters while processing an individual query. The architecture is intended to improve efficiency and control inference costs while retaining the capabilities of a large-scale system.
The model supports multimodal inputs, enabling it to process text, images and video. It also provides a context window of up to one million tokens, allowing developers and enterprises to use large documents, code repositories and extensive datasets within a single interaction.
Alibaba has positioned Qwen3.8-Max as an open-weight model, allowing developers to access and modify its model weights for research, customisation and deployment. Open-weight availability can help organisations adapt AI systems to specific industries, languages and operational requirements without relying entirely on a closed, centrally hosted service.
The launch comes amid increasing competition among Chinese AI developers, including DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Zhipu AI and ByteDance. These companies are focusing on models that combine advanced reasoning and agentic capabilities with lower operating costs.
Alibaba is also expanding the Qwen family beyond general-purpose language generation. Its models are being developed for coding, reasoning, multimodal processing, autonomous agents and enterprise applications. The company has made several Qwen models available through its cloud infrastructure and public model repositories.
