AMD and OpenAI have announced a landmark multi-year, multi-generation partnership to deliver 6 gigawatts (GW) of AI compute infrastructure using AMD’s next-generation Instinct™ GPUs. The collaboration marks a major milestone in scaling global AI capabilities, beginning with the deployment of 1GW of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in the second half of 2026.
Under this agreement, AMD becomes a core strategic compute partner for OpenAI, supporting large-scale AI deployments that will extend across multiple GPU generations. The initiative builds on an ongoing collaboration that began with AMD’s MI300X series and advanced through the MI350X, and will now progress with the MI450 series and future architectures. The partnership reflects a deepening integration between AMD’s high-performance computing expertise and OpenAI’s leadership in generative AI research and application development.
Both organizations will collaborate closely on technical co-optimization, aligning hardware and software roadmaps to maximize performance and scalability for AI workloads. This synergy is expected to accelerate innovation across the broader ecosystem, enabling new efficiencies in training and deploying large AI models.
As part of the agreement, AMD has granted OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, linked to specific performance and deployment milestones. The first tranche will vest upon completion of the 1GW rollout, with additional tranches tied to scaling the infrastructure up to 6GW and achieving agreed-upon share price and technical goals.
“This collaboration brings together the strengths of AMD’s high-performance computing and OpenAI’s pioneering AI research,” said Dr. Lisa Su, Chair and CEO of AMD. “It’s a win-win partnership that will advance the frontiers of AI innovation at unprecedented scale.”
Sam Altman, Co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, emphasized the transformative nature of the deal: “Building the future of AI requires compute at massive scale. AMD’s leadership in chip design will help us move faster toward our mission of making advanced AI accessible to all.”
Jean Hu, AMD’s CFO, noted that the partnership is expected to generate tens of billions in revenue and deliver strong shareholder value while advancing the global AI infrastructure landscape.
Together, AMD and OpenAI are laying the foundation for the next era of large-scale, high-performance AI computing.
