Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced the appointment of Amitabh Kant, former G20 Sherpa and ex-CEO of NITI Aayog, as a non-executive, independent director on its board. The appointment, effective October 29, 2025, will be for a term of five years, subject to shareholder approval.
The decision was formalized during L&T’s board meeting held on Wednesday. In its regulatory filing, the company stated that “Kant’s expertise in governance, public policy, and economic development will provide valuable perspectives for the company’s strategic growth, particularly as it ventures into global infrastructure and sustainability-focused initiatives.”
Amitabh Kant’s appointment marks a significant addition to L&T’s leadership framework, given his extensive experience across public administration and policy formulation. A member of the 1980 Kerala cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Kant retired after an illustrious 45-year career. Over the decades, he has played a pivotal role in shaping major national programs such as Make in India, Startup India, and Incredible India.
In 2022, Kant was appointed India’s G20 Sherpa, leading the nation’s agenda during its presidency and strengthening India’s voice in global economic and sustainability dialogues. Since stepping down from government service in June 2024, he has taken on several corporate and advisory positions. He currently serves on the boards of HCL Technologies and IndiGo, and acts as Senior Advisor to Fairfax Financial Holdings, led by Canadian investor Prem Watsa.
