Anthropic has acquired Stainless, a New York-based developer tools startup whose technology is widely used by major companies including OpenAI, Google, and Cloudflare. Founded in 2022, Stainless gained recognition in the AI sector for simplifying and automating the creation and maintenance of software development kits (SDKs), which developers use to interact with APIs
The company developed infrastructure that supports official programming libraries across multiple coding languages, allowing businesses to offer smoother and more efficient API experiences for developers. Its client list reportedly included leading tech and AI companies such as OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Anthropic itself.
Although the exact financial terms of the acquisition were not revealed publicly, previous reports indicated that Anthropic had been in talks for a deal worth more than $300 million. Industry observers view the acquisition as a strategic step that gives Anthropic greater control over a critical layer of developer infrastructure within the AI ecosystem.
After the acquisition, Anthropic is expected to phase out Stainless’ hosted service offerings, including its SDK generator platform. However, current customers will continue to own the SDKs they previously generated and will still have the ability to update and expand them independently.
