Forged in India: How the Crucible of the Subcontinent Builds Globally Resilient Startups

There is a common saying in the global startup ecosystem: if you can build a successful business in India, you can effortlessly build one anywhere. Over the years, building a global startup from India has proven to be more than just a motivational platitude – it is an operational reality. India is a market of beautiful contradictions. We boast some of the most advanced Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in the world. India has the knack of making massive technological shifts feel ordinary very quickly. UPI touching 22,000 crore transactions and Aadhaar becoming a core layer digital identity are proof of that. At the same time, founders are dealing with incredibly complex, ever-shifting operational realities. Building a startup here doesn’t just test your business model; it fundamentally rewrites your DNA as a founder. It demands a level of grit that prepares you to compete on any global stage, from Bengaluru to Dubai and beyond.

Here is what six years of building in the fintech trenches has taught me about challenges, resilience, and the relentless discipline required to sustain and thrive.

The Bootstrapper’s Reality: Profitability Over Vanity

In India, for a long time, the startup ecosystem was flush with capital, and growth above everything else was the celebrated mantra. But it is not always necessary to follow the crowd. In a high-volume, low-margin market like India, capital can only act as a shock absorber for so long. Eventually, the unit economics catch up with you. The market has started unveiling that reality, too. Startup funding in FY 2025-26 dropped by 18% compared to the previous year, while late-stage funding saw a particularly sharp decline. What stood out, however, was that early-stage funding continued to rise. That says something important about where the ecosystem is heading. Investors are still willing to bet on ambition, but businesses today are expected to show far more clarity around how they survive, scale, and sustain themselves over time.

This is why we operated with a bootstrapped mentality from day one. Businesses that are built to stand on their own feet, with sustainability at the core, are often the ones that endure market shifts and uncertainty far better. Our experience in the digital infrastructure space has shown us that building meaningful innovation requires far more than strong technology. Discipline is what gives businesses the longevity to survive long enough to see that innovation creates real impact across the masses.

Navigating the Regulatory Frontier

Operating in a hyper-innovative regulatory environment is a double-edged sword. On one hand, India’s regulatory bodies are pushing boundaries that the rest of the world is desperately trying to emulate. On the other hand, iterating at the edge of financial technology means dealing with intense scrutiny, abrupt policy shifts, and complex compliance frameworks. You will face roadblocks. You will face inquiries, sudden operational pauses, and days when the bureaucratic friction feels insurmountable.

This is where the true test lies. Many view these regulatory hurdles as business-ending catastrophes. But when you are building for the long term, you learn to view them as the crucible. Especially in a market where consumers take their data privacy very seriously and almost 70% consumers are skeptical about how businesses handle their data, regulatory compliance can become the gateway to earning customer trust, a key vector for thriving businesses in India. Therefore, compliance doesn’t just force you to tighten your operations, institutionalize your compliance, and build systems that are bulletproof, but also to build businesses that customers truly trust. This is why it is pivotal to learn that navigating the system with transparency and agility is just as important as your product roadmap.

The Trinity of Survival: Challenges, Resilience, and Discipline

The journey of building a startup in India is rarely a linear path of up-and-to-the-right growth. However, the challenges that the market presents eventually build clarity. When margins are squeezed by fierce competition, and the market demands world-class technology at a fraction of the global cost, you are forced to strip away the noise and focus on absolute value creation.

Resilience keeps you in the game. It is the ability to take a regulatory hit or a market downturn, absorb the shock, and show up the next day with a clear head and a steadier approach. Discipline is execution. It is an unglamorous, day-to-day commitment to operational efficiency, managing cash flows, and protecting the bottom line even when it would be easier to chase the next shiny object.

Looking forward, the focus shouldn’t be on just scaling, but also on evolving. The bruises, the late-night strategy pivots, and the relentless push for profitability will culminate in a profound transformation. Building a startup in India can wear you down, but if you have the discipline to stay the course, it will rebuild you into something unbreakable. The market doesn’t just create companies; it forges global competitors. Our experience has shown us it can take us a long way.
