
The Indian government is set to roll out 38,000 GPUs at affordable rates and establish 600 data labs across the country in a major push to expand artificial intelligence (AI) research and innovation. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced that the move will significantly boost access to advanced computing resources for researchers, startups, and enterprises, helping India strengthen its AI capabilities at scale.
Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary and CEO of the IndiaAI Mission at MeitY, underscored the broader vision behind these initiatives. “The initiatives are part of a broader push to build a robust and inclusive AI ecosystem,” he said, emphasizing that accessibility and inclusivity will be at the heart of India’s AI growth story.
The deployment of large-scale GPU infrastructure, coupled with the creation of hundreds of data labs nationwide, aims to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world applications. By making high-performance computing available at affordable costs, the government intends to accelerate experimentation, model training, and deployment of AI across multiple sectors—from healthcare and education to agriculture and governance.
Singh also highlighted that responsible innovation will remain a guiding principle as India scales up AI adoption. “Embedding responsible and ethical AI frameworks, along with combating misinformation, would be critical as the country scales its AI adoption,” he noted. This signals the government’s recognition of not just the opportunities but also the challenges posed by rapid AI integration.
The new infrastructure will support the IndiaAI Mission’s long-term objective of democratizing access to AI tools while ensuring compliance with ethical standards and safety guidelines. By encouraging startups and enterprises to adopt AI practices, MeitY aims to create an environment where innovation can thrive without compromising public trust.
With AI increasingly becoming a cornerstone of global competitiveness, India’s efforts to build a homegrown, inclusive ecosystem are designed to position the country as both a major user and developer of advanced AI technologies.
