Netflix Harnesses Generative AI to Power Visual Effects in Argentine Sci-Fi Series ‘El Eternauta’

In a bold move that reflects the evolving intersection of technology and entertainment, Netflix has confirmed its use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the production of its highly anticipated Argentine sci-fi series, El Eternauta. The announcement marks a significant milestone in the streaming giant’s efforts to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into its creative workflows.

Speaking at a recent event, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos emphasized the transformative role AI is beginning to play in the film and television industry. “AI offers an incredible opportunity—not just to reduce costs, but to enhance creativity and bring ambitious stories to life,” Sarandos noted. He spotlighted El Eternauta as a key case study in how AI can help creators achieve complex visual feats that may have previously been out of reach due to budgetary constraints.

In particular, the production team deployed generative AI to simulate the collapse of a building in Buenos Aires, a high-stakes visual effect that traditionally would have demanded extensive resources and time. Thanks to AI-assisted VFX tools, the scene was completed approximately 10 times faster than conventional methods, and at a fraction of the cost—without compromising the visual quality or creative intent.

Based on the legendary Argentine graphic novel by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López, El Eternauta tells the story of a deadly snowfall and a group of survivors navigating a dystopian Buenos Aires. Given the scale and visual intensity of the narrative, the use of AI-powered effects allowed the creators to match the epic tone of the original material.

Netflix’s strategic use of generative AI aligns with a broader industry trend as studios increasingly explore advanced technologies to streamline production pipelines, elevate storytelling, and maintain competitive edge. While the use of AI in creative industries remains a subject of active debate—particularly concerning ethics, originality, and employment—Sarandos maintained that the technology’s true value lies in empowering storytellers rather than replacing them.

As El Eternauta prepares to make its debut, it also stands as a potential blueprint for the future of entertainment production—one where AI and artistry co-exist to unlock new levels of creative possibility.
