OpenAI has officially launched OpenAI Academy India, its first international extension of the AI education platform outside the United States, in collaboration with the IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
The initiative, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between OpenAI and the IndiaAI Mission, is designed to accelerate AI literacy and upskill diverse segments of the Indian population—ranging from developers and students to civil servants, educators, and small business owners.
The academy will contribute to the IndiaAI Mission’s FutureSkills programme and deliver a mix of online and offline learning modules, initially in English and Hindi, with plans to expand into other regional languages.
As part of the partnership, OpenAI has committed to:
- Sharing its digital skilling content on the Future Skills platform.
- Supporting capacity-building for government officials via the iGOT Karmayogi portal, with a focus on multilingual accessibility.
- Hosting webinars and workshops in six Indian cities.
- Providing $100,000 worth of API credits to 50 startups or fellows endorsed by the IndiaAI Mission.
- Organising hackathons in seven states, aiming to engage around 25,000 students.
- Inviting hackathon winners to attend OpenAI Dev Day events abroad.
- Supporting the training of one million teachers in the use of generative AI tools.
Union Minister for Electronics & IT, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, praised the collaboration, calling it a step toward “democratising access to knowledge and technology,” in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that advanced innovations reach all citizens.
Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI, emphasized India’s growing role in AI innovation and adoption. “We’re proud to partner with IndiaAI to launch OpenAI Academy India and help more people gain the confidence and skills to use AI meaningfully in their work, communities, and lives,” he said.
The OpenAI Academy platform offers a rich blend of video tutorials, interactive learning modules, expert-led sessions, and peer collaboration, designed to make AI tools and knowledge more accessible to a broader audience.
This launch marks a significant milestone in OpenAI’s global educational outreach, reflecting a shared belief that inclusive access to AI education can catalyse widespread innovation and empower communities.
