OpenAI Signs $38 Billion Cloud Partnership with AWS, Marking End of Microsoft Exclusivity

In a landmark move reshaping the global AI infrastructure landscape, OpenAI has signed a $38 billion deal with Amazon Web Services (AWS) — its first major partnership with the cloud giant — marking the end of its exclusive dependency on Microsoft. The collaboration will see OpenAI leverage hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs housed across AWS data centers in the United States, with plans for phased expansion to meet the company’s rapidly scaling AI workloads.

Following the announcement, Amazon’s stock surged 4%, reaching an all-time high as investors cheered the tech leader’s deepening footprint in the AI ecosystem.

Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.

The agreement represents a strategic pivot for OpenAI, signaling its intention to diversify its cloud partnerships and build greater operational independence as it prepares for potential public market ambitions. By securing long-term, high-performance computing capabilities through AWS, OpenAI aims to maintain its innovation momentum while mitigating reliance on a single infrastructure provider.

From Amazon’s perspective, the partnership cements its position as a critical player in powering advanced AI research and deployment. AWS, already hosting OpenAI rival Anthropic, now becomes a central hub for multiple frontier AI organizations, strengthening its leadership in cloud-based AI infrastructure.

The breadth and immediate availability of optimized compute demonstrates why AWS is uniquely positioned to support OpenAI’s vast AI workloads,” said Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, underscoring the company’s technological edge and scalability in delivering next-generation compute performance.

The collaboration also aligns with Amazon’s broader AI ambitions, which span custom silicon development, generative AI services, and enterprise-grade AI integrations across its ecosystem.

For OpenAI, this partnership signifies more than just a shift in cloud strategy—it’s a calculated step toward ensuring sustainable, scalable AI innovation. By balancing its partnerships and expanding compute diversity, OpenAI is preparing to power the next wave of artificial intelligence while reshaping how the industry’s biggest players coexist in an increasingly competitive landscape.
