PM Modi To Lay Foundation Stone For Andhra Pradesh’s First Semiconductor Facility

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for the ASIP Semiconductor Project in Visakhapatnam, launching Andhra Pradesh’s first semiconductor manufacturing facility approved under the India Semiconductor Mission. The project is being developed by ASIP Technologies Pvt Ltd in partnership with South Korea’s APACT and involves investment of more than Rs 460 crore. The planned facility is expected to manufacture about 96 million semiconductor chips annually and create skilled employment in the region.

The project adds a state-level manufacturing node to India’s broader chip ecosystem, which is being built through a combination of central incentives, state industrial policy, foreign technology partnerships and domestic electronics demand. While the investment size is modest compared with large wafer fabrication facilities, the significance lies in expanding the number of semiconductor-linked projects beyond a few major clusters and drawing more states into electronics manufacturing competition. Visakhapatnam gives Andhra Pradesh a foothold in a sector that has become central to industrial policy, supply-chain security and advanced manufacturing.

The South Korea partnership is also material. India’s semiconductor ambitions require manufacturing processes, packaging capability, equipment know-how, testing ecosystems and trained technical manpower. Projects tied to experienced Asian semiconductor players can help compress execution timelines, particularly in areas where India is still building depth. The expected annual output of about 96 million chips positions the facility as a production-oriented asset rather than a purely design or R&D initiative.

The announcement comes as India attempts to move from incentive announcements to project execution. The India Semiconductor Mission has already supported proposals across fabrication, assembly, testing, packaging and design-linked capabilities. The next phase will depend on whether approved projects can move through land, utilities, cleanroom construction, equipment procurement, technology transfer and hiring without extended delays. Semiconductor manufacturing is capital-intensive and operationally unforgiving; power reliability, water availability, process discipline and supplier development will matter as much as headline investment.

For Andhra Pradesh, the project can anchor a broader electronics-manufacturing corridor if it is connected to component suppliers, engineering institutes, logistics links and downstream electronics customers. For enterprises and electronics OEMs, each additional domestic chip or packaging facility improves optionality in a supply environment shaped by geopolitical risk, advanced-node constraints and rising demand from AI, telecom, automotive and industrial systems.

The foundation-stone event is therefore not just a ceremonial launch. It is a test of whether India’s semiconductor push can translate into distributed manufacturing capacity, credible technology partnerships and skilled jobs outside the country’s already visible electronics hubs.
