Samsung Electronics has entered into a landmark partnership with OpenAI to jointly advance global AI data center infrastructure and develop next-generation technologies across industries ranging from semiconductors and cloud services to shipbuilding and maritime innovations. The collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to scaling AI capabilities while addressing the challenges of sustainability and future infrastructure needs.
The agreement was formalized at Samsung’s headquarters in Seoul, Korea, through a letter of intent signed by top executives including Young Hyun Jun, Vice Chairman & CEO of Samsung Electronics; Sung-an Choi, Vice Chairman & CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries; Sechul Oh, President & CEO of Samsung C&T; and Junehee Lee, President & CEO of Samsung SDS.
As part of the deal, Samsung Electronics will deliver advanced semiconductor solutions tailored for OpenAI’s Stargate initiative. The partnership anticipates demand of up to 900,000 DRAM wafers per month, highlighting the scale of compute resources required to train and run next-generation AI models. Leveraging its expertise across memory, logic, and foundry technologies, Samsung will support the full AI pipeline—from training to inference.
Complementing this, Samsung SDS will collaborate with OpenAI to design, develop, and operate state-of-the-art AI data centers. The company will also expand enterprise AI adoption by providing services built on OpenAI’s models and by reselling ChatGPT Enterprise to businesses in Korea.
Meanwhile, Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries are taking a pioneering approach to data center infrastructure. Their focus will be on developing floating data centers—an innovative solution to overcome land scarcity, reduce cooling costs, and minimize carbon emissions. Additionally, the companies will explore the creation of floating power plants and control centers, potentially reshaping the future of large-scale AI infrastructure deployment.
The strategic collaboration also signals a broader ambition: to position Korea at the forefront of the global AI race. By combining Samsung’s industrial and technological strength with OpenAI’s leadership in artificial intelligence, the partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge AI solutions across industries. Samsung, for its part, is also integrating ChatGPT into its own operations to drive digital transformation and efficiency within its corporate ecosystem.
This partnership between Samsung and OpenAI not only reflects the increasing demand for scalable, sustainable AI infrastructure but also represents a step toward reimagining how global industries will be powered by artificial intelligence in the years ahead.
