AI-powered English learning platform SpeakX.ai has secured $16 million (approximately ₹142 crore) in a new funding round led by WestBridge Capital, with additional participation from Goodwater Capital and existing investor Elevation Capital. The round also included noted angel investors Shyamal Anadkat of OpenAI and Ronnie Screwvala of upGrad, marking a major milestone in the company’s growth journey.
This is SpeakX’s first fundraising since its 2023 pivot from YellowClass, a children’s learning platform launched during the pandemic, to a redefined model focused on AI-driven spoken English learning. The company plans to utilize the new capital to strengthen its AI capabilities, expand into regional Indian markets, and pursue sustainable scaling.
SpeakX.ai’s innovative learning model leverages generative AI to simulate one-on-one conversations, offering users instant feedback on pronunciation, fluency, and tone. The platform’s subscription-based structure is tailored for mass-market accessibility, targeting learners who wish to improve spoken English through immersive, conversational practice. The company initially operated using OpenAI’s enterprise API but has since transitioned to Google Gemini, enabling faster, more adaptive, and contextually rich learning experiences.
Currently, SpeakX primarily serves Hindi-speaking users, but the startup plans to introduce Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Marathi support in the coming months. Its expansion into vernacular markets aligns with India’s growing demand for affordable, tech-enabled English learning solutions.
Financially, the company has demonstrated strong performance, reporting ₹5 crore in monthly revenue, ₹1.5 crore in profit, and over 200,000 active paying subscribers. With a user base exceeding 10 million, SpeakX has already surpassed ₹10 crore in cumulative profit during the ongoing fiscal year.
Founded in 2020 by Anshul Mittal as YellowClass, the startup initially offered online hobby classes during the COVID-19 lockdowns, quickly attracting two million monthly users. However, engagement declined after schools reopened, prompting a strategic pivot in 2023. The company streamlined operations, reducing its workforce from 200 to 20 employees, and rebuilt the platform around AI-based spoken language improvement.
With this fresh funding, SpeakX.ai aims to solidify its position as a leader in AI-powered language learning, expanding its reach and reshaping how millions of Indians learn to communicate in English.
