Star Hospitals, Hyderabad, has appointed Rajendra Kshirsagar as its Chief Information Officer, a role he took up in August 2026. Healthcare runs on trust, and today it also runs on technology, and this appointment brings more than three decades of experience to the hospital’s digital journey.
Rajendra’s story began in 1990, not in a hospital but in code. He started as a computer programmer at C-Mation Consultancy, building inventory, salary processing, production management and MIS applications for the Milton Group. He then moved to Camlin Limited, developing and maintaining inventory management, payroll and MIS reporting systems. In 1994 he joined Hotel Ambassador, Mumbai, as Systems Executive, where he headed the IT department and built MIS applications to track call management efficiency and food costing across the hotel’s outlets. He later spent eleven years as EDP Manager at Holiday Inn Bombay, Juhu, until 2007. Those years gave him a deep understanding of how technology supports large, round-the-clock operations where guests, or patients, expect everything to just work.
In December 2007, Rajendra moved into healthcare as Head of IT at Breach Candy Hospital Trust, Mumbai. He joined while the hospital was migrating from an in-house Hospital Information System (HIS) to a new product version, and within five months the new HIS was successfully implemented, with all the necessary data ported from the old system.
He then went on to lead IT for two greenfield hospital projects, where technology was part of the design from day one. At Hinduja Healthcare Surgical, Mumbai, he headed the IT department of a hospital focused on making the best use of available technology. From its first day of operations, it ran a full Document Management System, so OPD patient records were stored digitally and no physical copies were filed. A full Siemens PACS was also live from day one. At Meitra Hospital, Kozhikode, he served as CIO on a state-of-the-art project built around a paperless environment. The HIS was interfaced with the Draeger ICU management system, PACS, the SAP MM and HR modules, a patient queue management system and canteen billing, and the hospital used a full-fledged Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system from its first day.
His CIO journey continued at some of India’s well-known healthcare institutions, including Holy Family Hospital, Mumbai, where he served for over five years from 2018, Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, New Delhi, and Rajagiri Hospital, Kochi, where he was Head of Information Technology. Across these roles, his work has covered strategy, IT infrastructure management, project delivery and the thoughtful use of technology in patient care.
Rajendra’s career has followed one consistent thread: hospitals that start with technology at the core, not as an afterthought. Having led paperless hospitals, integrated clinical and business systems, and carried out complex HIS migrations, he brings both vision and hands-on experience to Star Hospitals. As the hospital steps into its next phase of digital growth, his leadership promises smarter systems, smoother patient experiences and a stronger technology backbone for clinicians and staff alike.
