Payments giant Stripe has introduced a new version of its digital wallet, Link, designed for an emerging era where autonomous AI agents can handle transactions such as shopping, bookings, and ticket purchases on behalf of users. The announcement was made during the company’s annual conference, positioning the product as part of a broader push toward “agentic commerce.”
Link allows users to connect multiple payment methods, including cards, bank accounts, crypto wallets, and buy-now-pay-later services, while also storing billing and shipping details for faster checkouts. In addition to standard wallet features, it enables users to track spending and monitor recurring subscriptions, with the ability to update payment details across services when required.
What differentiates Link is its integration with AI agents. Users can grant agents permission to make purchases without directly exposing sensitive payment credentials. Instead, the system operates through a controlled approval process: the AI agent generates a payment request with context, and the user must review and approve the transaction before it is completed.
The wallet uses secure authentication methods, such as OAuth, and can issue one-time-use virtual cards or shared payment tokens to ensure privacy and control. Stripe has also indicated that future updates may allow users to define spending limits or automate approvals under predefined conditions, further enhancing the usability of AI-driven transactions.
Built on Stripe’s infrastructure for AI-powered payments, Link also provides developers with tools to integrate wallet functionality directly into AI assistants, removing the need to build payment systems from scratch. This move reflects growing industry momentum around AI-led commerce, where intelligent agents are increasingly expected to handle end-to-end purchasing tasks while maintaining security and transparency for users.
