Tamil Nadu Invests ₹25 Crore in Space Startup Agnikul Cosmos to Boost India’s Private Space Sector

The Tamil Nadu government, through the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), has approved an investment of ₹25 crore in Chennai-based spacetech startup Agnikul Cosmos. The funding is part of the state’s TIDCO Startup Investment Policy 2025, which aims to support high-potential deep-tech companies and strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a hub for advanced technology and innovation.

The investment is expected to help Agnikul accelerate its operational readiness, scale aerospace manufacturing capabilities, and advance its rocket stage recovery program. It will also support the development of the company’s integrated space campus being built on a 300-acre site allocated by the Tamil Nadu government near Kulasekharapatnam.

Agnikul Cosmos is a spacetech startup incubated at IIT Madras and focuses on building small satellite launch vehicles and advanced rocket propulsion technologies. The company is currently developing its flagship launch vehicle, Agnibaan, designed to deploy small satellites into low-Earth orbit for commercial and research missions.

The state government’s funding reflects a broader effort to promote deep-technology industries such as space technology, electric mobility, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing. By directly investing in startups working in these sectors, Tamil Nadu aims to encourage innovation, create high-skill jobs, and strengthen the local technology ecosystem.

Officials said the investment highlights the government’s growing focus on emerging sectors that can drive long-term economic growth and technological leadership. With India’s private space industry expanding rapidly after regulatory reforms, startups like Agnikul Cosmos are playing an increasingly important role in developing launch infrastructure, satellite services, and next-generation aerospace technologies.

The funding also reinforces Tamil Nadu’s ambition to become a major center for space technology and advanced manufacturing, especially as new launch facilities and related aerospace infrastructure are being developed in the region.
