Tata Digital Posts ₹4,974 Crore Loss in FY26 as BigBasket Faces Quick-Commerce Pressure

Tata Digital reported a net loss of ₹4,974 crore for the financial year ended March 2026 as mounting competition in quick commerce continued to weigh on BigBasket, even as the company’s overall revenue recorded double-digit growth.

Tata Digital’s revenue increased 11.9% to ₹35,990 crore in FY26 from ₹32,188 crore in the previous financial year. Its loss, however, widened from ₹4,610 crore in FY25, highlighting the high costs involved in expanding the group’s consumer digital businesses and defending their market positions.

The company’s portfolio includes online grocery platform BigBasket, electronics retailer Croma, digital healthcare platform Tata 1mg, ecommerce platform Tata Cliq and super app Tata Neu. While several of these businesses continued to contribute to revenue growth, BigBasket remained under pressure as India’s online grocery market rapidly shifted towards quick commerce.

BigBasket has been adapting its operations to compete with platforms offering deliveries within minutes. The transition requires investment in dark stores, local inventory, logistics infrastructure and last-mile delivery capacity, increasing expenditure as competition for customers intensifies.

Despite the losses, Tata Digital’s gross merchandise value reached ₹46,515 crore within four years of its launch, indicating the scale achieved across its digital commerce portfolio. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said, “The Indian e-commerce market shifted rapidly towards quick commerce, which BigBasket is adapting to.”

Tata Digital is simultaneously repositioning Tata Neu from a broad commerce-focused super app towards a platform centred on financial services and customer loyalty. The company plans to strengthen payments, lending and insurance offerings while using NeuPass to connect customers with brands across the Tata ecosystem.

The strategy includes an ambition to increase Tata Neu’s monthly payment users tenfold. The shift reflects an effort to build more frequent customer engagement and create a differentiated role for the platform rather than competing solely as another ecommerce marketplace.

Tata Digital’s FY26 performance shows that its businesses are achieving higher scale, but profitability remains challenging as BigBasket navigates aggressive quick-commerce competition and Tata Neu undergoes a strategic repositioning.
