A U.S. government court filing has revealed that Grok, the artificial intelligence model developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, was used as part of U.S. military operations involving Iran, providing one of the clearest public acknowledgements to date of a commercial AI system supporting defense activities.
The disclosure emerged through a legal brief filed on June 15, 2026, in which federal officials outlined the national security significance of artificial intelligence infrastructure supporting government operations. According to testimony cited in the filing, Grok is being used within Project Maven, the U.S. Department of Defense’s AI-assisted targeting and intelligence platform.
The filing included testimony from Cameron Stanley, chief of the Department of Defense’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, who stated that Grok supports mission-critical national security applications. The document also noted that AI-assisted systems were involved in operations that deployed more than 2,000 munitions against approximately 2,000 targets over a 96-hour period.
While the filing confirmed Grok’s use within military systems, officials did not publicly disclose the specific functions performed by the AI model during the operations. As a result, the extent of its involvement in intelligence analysis, target identification, operational planning, or other defense activities has not been detailed publicly.
The disclosure highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in modern defense operations as governments increasingly integrate advanced AI capabilities into military and intelligence systems. AI technologies are being evaluated for applications ranging from data analysis and threat assessment to battlefield awareness and decision support.
The development has also intensified discussions surrounding the governance of AI in defense environments. Policymakers, technology companies, and civil society organizations continue to debate issues related to transparency, accountability, human oversight, and the ethical use of AI in military contexts.
The revelation comes amid broader efforts by governments worldwide to accelerate investments in artificial intelligence as a strategic capability. Defense agencies across multiple countries are exploring how advanced AI systems can enhance operational effectiveness while ensuring appropriate safeguards remain in place.
The court filing provides a rare public glimpse into the intersection of commercial AI development and national security operations, underscoring the increasingly important role advanced AI models are playing in government and defense activities.
