IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, has appointed Vikram Singh Mehta as the new Chairman of its Board, marking a significant leadership transition for India’s largest airline. Mehta, a seasoned executive and existing board member, succeeds Venkataramani Sumantran, who served as chairman for the past three years.
The announcement, made on May 28, 2025, underscores IndiGo’s strategic focus on experienced leadership as it navigates a dynamic aviation landscape. Mehta brings a wealth of experience from his roles as Chairman of the Shell group of companies in India and CEO of Shell Markets and Shell Chemicals in Egypt. He has also served on the boards of notable Indian companies including Colgate-Palmolive (India), Mahindra & Mahindra, and Larsen & Toubro.
A former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Mehta holds advanced degrees from Oxford University and Tufts University. His leadership has earned him accolades such as “Businessman of the Year” by Asia House and “Best Independent Director in India” from the Asia Centre for Corporate Governance and Sustainability. His association with IndiGo began in May 2022.
IndiGo acknowledged outgoing chairman Venkataramani Sumantran for his contributions during a transformative period, especially in steering the airline through its post-pandemic recovery.
The leadership change coincides with a major financial move by co-founder Rakesh Gangwal, who recently sold a 5.72% stake in InterGlobe Aviation, valued at approximately ₹11,564 crore. This divestment further signals a period of transition for the airline, as it seeks to balance governance stability with shareholder dynamics.
With Mehta at the helm, IndiGo is expected to focus on sustained growth, operational excellence, and navigating the evolving global aviation sector.
