India has successfully installed over 17,300 graphics processing units (GPUs) as part of its ambitious IndiaAI Mission, signaling a significant step forward in building the nation’s AI infrastructure.
According to an Economic Times report, the update was shared during a review meeting last week between IndiaAI CEO Abhishek Singh and cloud service providers (CSPs). The session was focused on assessing GPU deployment and their integration into the upcoming IndiaAI compute platform.
Out of the ten CSPs selected for the initiative, Jio Platforms and CtrlS Datacenters are yet to complete their GPU deployments. Others, including Yotta, NextGen, and E2E Networks, have made substantial progress in rolling out their units.
Under the IndiaAI Mission — which has a budget allocation exceeding ₹10,000 crore — the government has approved the import of 34,333 GPUs in its initial two phases. The goal is to create a robust, cloud-based computing ecosystem tailored for startups, researchers, and academic institutions working in the field of artificial intelligence.
The GPUs will support advanced model training efforts, laying the groundwork for India to develop its own Large Language Model (LLM) and reduce dependence on foreign AI infrastructure.
The mission reflects India’s growing focus on building sovereign AI capabilities and democratizing access to high-performance compute resources essential for innovation in fields such as healthcare, education, and governance.
