The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has appointed Sunil J. Singhi as an Independent Director on its board, marking a strategic move to deepen its commitment to inclusive and equitable digital commerce in India.
With a rich background spanning policy-making, business leadership, and community development, Singhi is expected to bring valuable insights to ONDC’s mission of democratizing digital commerce access across the country. According to an official statement, his presence will support the network’s push to empower small retailers, traders, and underserved segments of the economy.
Currently, Chairman of the National Traders’ Welfare Board, Singhi has held several key positions over the years. These include serving as Vice Chairman of the Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation and Chairman of the Gujarat Labour Welfare Board, where he helped facilitate welfare access for over 50,000 businesses and industries.
His leadership record also includes a directorship at FCI Aravali Gypsum and Minerals India Limited, and he holds the distinction of being the first Jain representative on the National Commission for Minorities, Government of India.
A long-standing ally of India’s trading communities, Singhi has consistently championed the rights of small retailers, distributors, and informal sector workers. His initiatives have spanned large-scale programs in education, livelihood, skill development, and welfare, particularly targeting marginalised groups and remote regions.
The appointment aligns with ONDC’s broader goal of building an open, interoperable, and inclusive digital ecosystem, and comes at a time when the Indian government is placing increased focus on enabling equitable participation in the country’s fast-growing digital economy.
