Nokia and Surge Launch High-Capacity Subsea Network Linking Jakarta and Singapore to Expand Digital Access in Indonesia

In a major milestone for Southeast Asia’s digital infrastructure, Nokia and PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk (Surge) have completed the deployment of a new subsea optical network connecting Jakarta, Indonesia, and Singapore. The project, centered around Nokia’s high-performance 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), marks a significant leap in regional connectivity, with direct implications for broadband accessibility, digital inclusion, and enterprise growth across Indonesia.

The subsea cable system is a vital component of Surge’s broader initiative to provide fiber-based broadband access to up to 40 million households throughout the country. As Indonesia continues to prioritize digital transformation and connectivity expansion, the Jakarta–Singapore route strengthens cross-border data exchange and serves as a strategic backbone for both international and domestic traffic.

Leveraging Nokia’s 1830 PSS platform, the newly established subsea link offers a starting capacity of 20.8 terabits, scalable to meet rising data demand. It also supports ultra-high-speed connectivity of up to 800GE, making it ideally suited to power advanced digital services for enterprises, cloud providers, and public sector users alike.

The optical solution is engineered to be space- and power-efficient, making it well-suited for Indonesia’s diverse geography and operational environment. Its high scalability will help Surge manage growth efficiently as it works to fulfill its vision of digital equity.

This strategic deployment underscores our commitment to digital equity and building a more connected, inclusive future,” said Shannedy Ong, Director at PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk. “With Nokia’s advanced optical transmission technology, we can efficiently scale our network to deliver reliable, high-speed, and affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities across Indonesia.

James Watt, Vice President and General Manager of Optical Networks at Nokia, echoed the sentiment, stating, “Connecting up to 40 million people with affordable broadband access is a huge honor and responsibility. With Surge, we are building a high-performance network and providing solutions that will unlock new opportunities for growth across Indonesia.

The deployment not only fortifies Indonesia’s digital foundation but also positions the region as a stronger player in the global data economy. By improving cross-border data center interconnectivity and delivering faster, more reliable internet access, the project is poised to catalyze socio-economic development and empower millions with new digital tools and services.

This collaboration between Nokia and Surge represents a significant stride toward closing the digital divide and enabling inclusive digital transformation across Southeast Asia.
