In a landmark move, Karnataka is set to build India’s first AI-powered city with the launch of the Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township (GBIT) at Bidadi, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced. Envisioned as Bengaluru’s second central business district, the 9,000-acre township will follow a modern “work-live-play” model, offering robust infrastructure, seamless connectivity, over 1,100 acres of green spaces, and lakhs of employment opportunities for the state’s youth.
Shivakumar emphasised transparency and fair land acquisition as the cornerstone of the project. “This project will go ahead, but with complete transparency and fair compensation. I am not ready to go to jail like former CM Yediyurappa by denotifying lands,” he said, adding that farmers would be treated as “partners in development.” More than 70% of landowners have already opted for compensation, with the state promising annuities, housing, and jobs under a comprehensive rehabilitation policy.
Backed by an investment of ₹20,000 crore, GBIT will dedicate over 2,000 acres to AI-driven industries, aiming to attract global tech players, startups, and multinational corporations. Shivakumar highlighted the project’s focus on skilling and employment, stating, “Lakhs of young people from our state will benefit from new jobs and skilling centres that will prepare them for AI-driven industries.”
The township’s blueprint also includes sustainability initiatives, featuring a ₹750–1,000 crore rejuvenation plan for Byramangala Lake and a 100 MLD sewage treatment plant to support water management and ecological balance.
After nearly two decades of delays since its initial proposal in 2006, the project is finally gaining momentum. Joint land measurement begins on September 11, with final acquisition notifications expected by December 2025. Authorities have committed to completing compensation payouts within 30 days of acquisition and delivering developed sites within a year.
The AI city is targeted for completion within three years, marking a major milestone in Karnataka’s vision to become a hub for innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable urban growth.
