SAP Launches Sovereign Cloud in India to Strengthen Data Security and Compliance

German software giant SAP has officially launched its Sovereign Cloud offering in India, providing customers with the ability to store and manage data locally while adhering to India’s National Information Security Policy & Guidelines (NISPG). The initiative is designed to support governments and regulated industries in modernizing their infrastructure with cloud and AI technologies, while retaining complete control over sensitive data.

The launch aligns with India’s vision of becoming a global hub for data centres and AI infrastructure. It comes ahead of the IT Ministry’s proposed Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP) Rules, 2025, which aim to impose stricter oversight on personal data processed by major technology firms, including Meta, Google, and Apple, ensuring that critical data remains within Indian jurisdiction.

“With SAP Sovereign Cloud in India, customers can embrace cloud and AI while maintaining full operational and legal control,” said Martin Merz, President, SAP Sovereign Cloud. Manish Prasad, SAP India MD, added that the solution enables regulated industries to innovate confidently while ensuring their data remains secure.

The platform is built on an open-source, full-stack framework, offering flexible infrastructure, platform, application, and AI solutions tailored to enterprise requirements. To reinforce national security standards, SAP is also establishing a Sure Operational Facility at its Bengaluru campus. This facility will provide additional assurance for organizations handling sensitive or regulated data, ensuring compliance with Indian cybersecurity mandates.

SAP’s cloud services currently support more than 440,000 customers globally, including many of the world’s largest enterprises, with India contributing a significant portion of the company’s research and development workforce. The launch of the Sovereign Cloud in India is expected to accelerate digital transformation for industries requiring strict data governance, allowing them to adopt advanced technologies such as AI, machine learning, and analytics without compromising compliance or operational oversight.

By offering a secure, locally compliant cloud infrastructure, SAP is positioning itself to meet the growing demand for sovereign data solutions in India while empowering businesses to leverage cloud innovation confidently and responsibly.
