Andhra Pradesh invites Capgemini to establish IT development centre in Visakhapatnam

The Andhra Pradesh government has invited global technology services company Capgemini to establish a major IT development centre and a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Visakhapatnam. The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Andhra Pradesh IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh and Capgemini chief executive Aiman Ezzat in the coastal city. The move is aimed at strengthening the state’s technology ecosystem and attracting large global firms to invest in the region.

According to the state government, the proposed IT development centre could generate around 20,000 jobs if the project moves forward. Officials believe the investment could significantly boost employment opportunities in the technology sector and support the broader goal of positioning Visakhapatnam as a leading IT and innovation hub in India.

During the discussions, the minister encouraged the company to establish service centres focused on cloud services and business process management (BPM). These verticals are expected to play a key role in expanding digital services and supporting global clients through technology-driven solutions. The proposed centre would also contribute to strengthening India’s role as a global technology delivery hub.

The Andhra Pradesh government also invited Capgemini to collaborate with universities in the state to build emerging technology labs. These labs would focus on areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, digital engineering, and talent development. Officials believe such partnerships can help create a strong digital talent pipeline and prepare students for future technology careers.

In addition, the state government proposed that Capgemini explore setting up a dedicated quantum technology vertical and collaborate with global partners to develop advanced solutions for sectors such as financial services, sustainability, and enterprise optimisation. The company was also invited to participate in the development of Andhra Pradesh’s proposed Quantum Valley initiative.

Capgemini executives responded that the company would examine the proposals presented by the Andhra Pradesh government before making a final decision. The company currently employs around 340,000 people globally, with nearly 200,000 employees based in India, making the country one of its largest operational hubs.

State officials highlighted that Visakhapatnam is rapidly emerging as a major IT and data centre destination. Several large technology companies already operate in the region, and infrastructure developments such as the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport are expected to improve connectivity and attract more global investments. The government hopes that attracting companies like Capgemini will accelerate the city’s transformation into a major technology and innovation centre.

The proposal reflects the state’s broader strategy to strengthen its digital economy by building strong partnerships with multinational technology firms. If implemented, the Capgemini development centre could become one of the largest technology investments in the region and play a key role in expanding the IT sector in Visakhapatnam.
