ByteDance Plans to Spend Over $30 Billion on AI Expansion in 2026

Chinese technology giant ByteDance is preparing to dramatically increase its artificial intelligence spending in 2026, with reports indicating the company plans to invest more than US$30 billion into AI infrastructure, chips, and computing systems. The aggressive expansion highlights ByteDance’s ambition to become one of the world’s leading AI companies as global competition in generative AI intensifies.

According to multiple reports, ByteDance has raised its planned AI capital expenditure by at least 25% from earlier estimates, increasing the budget from around 160 billion yuan to more than 200 billion yuan. The investment will reportedly focus on AI model development, cloud infrastructure, advanced servers, and high-performance chips needed to power products across the company’s ecosystem, including TikTok, Doubao, CapCut, and other AI-driven services.

A significant portion of the spending is expected to go toward securing AI chips and expanding data centre capacity inside China. Due to ongoing US export restrictions on advanced Nvidia processors, ByteDance is increasingly investing in domestic semiconductor alternatives from Chinese chipmakers such as Huawei. Analysts say rising memory chip prices and surging demand for AI computing resources have also contributed to the sharp increase in planned spending.

The company has rapidly expanded its AI ambitions over the past year. ByteDance has been developing its own large language models under the “Seed” family while also investing heavily in AI-generated video, image, and content creation technologies. Products such as Seedance 2.0 and other generative AI tools have gained significant attention online for producing highly realistic AI-generated media. Industry observers believe ByteDance is positioning itself as a direct competitor to major AI firms in both China and the United States.

The move also reflects the broader AI infrastructure race taking place globally, where technology companies are committing unprecedented amounts of capital toward computing power and semiconductor supply chains. Firms including Meta, Oracle, Nvidia, and OpenAI have all announced multi-billion-dollar AI infrastructure plans this year. Experts believe ByteDance’s massive spending increase demonstrates how central artificial intelligence has become to the future strategies of major technology companies worldwide.
