Amazon India Layoffs Affect at Least 100 Employees Across Retail and Customer Service Functions

Amazon’s latest round of global job cuts has affected at least 100 employees in India, primarily across its retail and customer service functions, according to people familiar with the development cited by The Economic Times. The layoffs are part of a wider reduction affecting around 1,000 employees globally.

The development came to light on October 8, 2026, a day after Amazon’s Great Indian Festival sale began in India on October 7. The latest cuts have affected employees across several business functions as the company adjusts its organisational structure to align with its priorities.

The job reductions primarily involve Amazon’s Stores business, which oversees its core e-commerce operations. The affected functions include retail and customer service, while reports on the wider global restructuring have also identified selling partner services and other teams.

Responding to questions from The Economic Times, an Amazon spokesperson said the company regularly reviews its team structures to ensure they are positioned to respond quickly and innovate for customers. The spokesperson said parts of the Stores business had been reorganised to better support the company’s priorities and that a small number of roles had been eliminated as part of these changes.

Amazon has not publicly disclosed a detailed breakdown of the affected roles in India. The figure of at least 100 employees in the country comes from people familiar with the development, rather than an official company announcement.

Latest cuts follow earlier workforce reductions

The latest layoffs follow a much larger round of workforce reductions that began last year and continued into January. That restructuring affected approximately 30,000 employees as Amazon sought to reduce costs and simplify its organisational structure.

The company has continued to make smaller workforce adjustments since then. The latest cuts primarily affect white-collar employees and extend across the United States, India and the United Kingdom, according to reports.

Amazon founder and Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos also addressed the earlier job reductions in an interview with Fox News that aired on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. He linked the workforce cuts to the company’s hiring expansion during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people stayed home and online shopping demand increased sharply.

Bezos said the company had expanded its workforce considerably during that period, despite the significant effort employees had put into meeting demand.

Organisational changes as Amazon reassesses priorities

Amazon said the restructuring was intended to help parts of its Stores business operate in a structure better suited to delivering on its priorities. The company did not attribute the latest round of layoffs directly to artificial intelligence in its statement.

The cuts come as Amazon continues to review its workforce and operational structure following the rapid expansion of e-commerce during the pandemic. The company is also making substantial investments in technology and artificial intelligence infrastructure, while adjusting staffing across parts of its business.

The latest reductions highlight Amazon’s ongoing efforts to reshape its corporate workforce. Although the company described the number of affected roles as small, the impact extends across multiple functions and countries, including India, where at least 100 employees are reported to have been affected.

Amazon has said it is committed to supporting employees affected by the changes through their transition.
