OpenAI introduced a new feature called Intelligent UI in ChatGPT on October 7, 2026, alongside the expansion of its GPT-6 models. The feature allows ChatGPT to combine text with visual and interactive elements, including diagrams, charts, forms, graphics and tappable buttons, depending on the user’s request.
The company said the update is designed to make everyday tasks easier and help users understand complex topics through more interactive responses. Rather than presenting every answer as plain text, ChatGPT can select a format that better fits the question, allowing users to explore information and perform tasks directly within the conversation.
According to OpenAI’s announcement, GPT-6 has been trained to decide when interactive elements would be useful and how to arrange them within a response. For example, a comparison may be presented side by side, while an explanation of a complex concept could use an interactive diagram. When a straightforward text response is sufficient, ChatGPT can continue to provide a conventional answer.
Interactive tools within conversations
One of the main features of Intelligent UI is its ability to create tools tailored to a user’s request. These can include calculators, bill-splitting tools and simple games that operate directly within ChatGPT.
Users can also interact with visual explanations to understand how something works, change inputs and observe the resulting changes. For everyday planning, ChatGPT can combine instructions with relevant visual elements. A road trip plan, for instance, may include a map showing stops and useful places to visit along the route.
OpenAI said the system uses a library of interface components and a compiler that processes the interface as the model generates it. This allows elements of a response to appear progressively instead of requiring users to wait until the entire response is complete.
The company has also trained GPT-6 to make decisions about content, layout and interaction, with evaluations focused on clarity, usefulness and completeness. OpenAI said it continues to work on improving the model’s design decisions and expanding the range of experiences it can create.
GPT-6 brings faster responses
Alongside Intelligent UI, GPT-6 introduces changes intended to make ChatGPT respond more quickly. The model can begin answering while continuing to reason or use tools, allowing users to start reading an initial response before additional findings are added.
OpenAI said GPT-6 also improves how ChatGPT communicates the limits of its capabilities, including situations in which it lacks the information or tools required to answer a question. The company said it conducted alignment evaluations during training to assess honesty and responses to safety restrictions.
Global rollout and availability
OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 with Intelligent UI globally on October 7, 2026, to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users through the Chat tab. The company said the rollout would expand to Free and Go users starting October 8, 2026. Enterprise access depends on workspace administrator settings.
The Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers use GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go users receive GPT-6 Luna. The company clarified that the update applies to the Chat experience and does not change the models powering Work and Codex.
OpenAI said Intelligent UI represents a shift towards adapting the interface to the task rather than requiring users to work within a fixed conversational format. The company plans to continue developing experiences that combine text, data, visuals and interactive tools to help users explore information and complete everyday tasks.
