Amazon has completed its $50 billion investment in OpenAI, securing an estimated 5% stake in the artificial intelligence company as the ChatGPT developer prepares for a potential public listing, according to a report.
Amazon and OpenAI originally announced the investment in February 2026 as part of a multi-year strategic partnership. The transaction began with an initial investment of $15 billion, followed by another $35 billion after the completion of certain agreed conditions.
The deal forms part of OpenAI’s record funding round announced in February. The company initially disclosed $110 billion in new investment at a pre-money valuation of $730 billion, including commitments of $50 billion from Amazon and $30 billion each from Nvidia and SoftBank. OpenAI later said the round had expanded to $122 billion with participation from additional investors.
Neither Amazon nor OpenAI has publicly confirmed the reported 5% ownership figure. The companies have also not formally announced a date for OpenAI’s initial public offering. Reports indicate that the AI company is considering a public listing as it raises capital to fund the development and operation of increasingly advanced AI models.
The investment strengthens a broader commercial partnership between OpenAI and Amazon Web Services. Under their collaboration, OpenAI will use AWS cloud infrastructure and Amazon’s Trainium AI chips to train and operate its models. The companies also plan to develop customised models for Amazon’s consumer and enterprise applications.
OpenAI previously entered into a $38 billion agreement to access AWS computing infrastructure. The partnership is intended to provide the company with additional computing capacity while reducing its dependence on a single cloud provider.
For Amazon, the investment provides a stake in one of the world’s largest artificial intelligence companies while supporting demand for AWS infrastructure and its internally developed AI processors. Amazon is simultaneously expanding its partnership with Anthropic, the developer of the Claude family of AI models.
OpenAI develops ChatGPT and a range of generative AI models and enterprise products. The company is investing heavily in computing infrastructure, model development and AI products as competition intensifies among technology companies including Google, Anthropic, Meta and xAI.
