Amazon Continues Workforce Reduction Amidst Operational Restructuring

Amazon has commenced 2025 with another round of layoffs as part of its ongoing efforts to streamline operations and enhance efficiency. The latest job cuts impact the company’s communications and corporate responsibility department, which includes its sustainability team. While Amazon has not disclosed the exact number of affected employees, reports from The Seattle Times confirm that the restructuring aligns with the company’s broader strategy of simplifying management layers and expediting decision-making.

This move follows recent layoffs across multiple divisions, including the elimination of 200 positions within Amazon’s stores division, which oversees its vast online marketplace. Additionally, earlier this month, the company announced the closure of seven warehouses in Quebec, Canada, affecting approximately 1,700 workers. These job cuts are part of a pattern of strategic reductions implemented under CEO Andy Jassy, who has been focused on optimizing Amazon’s corporate structure since assuming leadership in 2021.

Amazon’s restructuring efforts began with large-scale layoffs in 2022 and 2023, during which at least 27,000 employees across various departments were let go. While the scale of workforce reductions has since decreased, the company continues to make targeted cuts in select areas to align with its evolving business needs.

Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser emphasized that these changes are intended to improve operational efficiency, allowing the company to move faster and bring teams closer to customers. This echoes Jassy’s remarks from September, when he stated that an excess number of managers was slowing down the organization. He directed teams to reduce managerial layers in favor of a leaner, more agile workforce that could accelerate productivity and decision-making.

In addition to workforce reductions, Amazon has also enforced stricter workplace policies, including a return-to-office mandate requiring employees to be on-site five days a week. While some employees speculate that this policy was designed to encourage voluntary resignations instead of further layoffs, Amazon has denied such claims.

For those affected by the recent job cuts, Amazon has confirmed severance packages, including 60 days of pay and benefits. Some employees in the communications and corporate responsibility division are being offered relocation opportunities, with the company providing financial and logistical support for the transition.

As Amazon continues to refine its corporate structure, these strategic adjustments reflect its commitment to efficiency while navigating an increasingly competitive retail and technology landscape.
