Seattle, Washington, Amazon has eliminated an undisclosed number of positions within parts of its artificial general intelligence organisation as the company concentrates resources on AI initiatives it considers most important to customers.
The latest reductions form part of a series of smaller organisational changes implemented since Amazon eliminated approximately 16,000 roles across the company in January 2026. Amazon has not disclosed the number of employees affected by the AGI cuts or provided a geographical breakdown. It is therefore unclear whether any India-based positions have been impacted.
“We’ve been building large AI models for several years, and it remains one of the most important things we’re working on,” an Amazon spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said the company was sharpening its focus in the rapidly changing AI market to move faster on priority projects. This had required difficult decisions, including eliminating certain roles within the AGI organisation, even as Amazon continued investing in areas considered important to customers’ future requirements.
Employees working under Adeeb Shanaa, Vice President of AGI Data Services, and Vishal Sharma, Vice President of AGI Information, reported being affected by the reductions on online forums, according to Reuters. However, the complete scale and organisational distribution of the cuts could not immediately be established.
The restructuring follows several leadership changes within Amazon’s advanced AI operations. Rohit Prasad, the senior executive who previously oversaw the company’s AGI work, left Amazon at the end of 2025. David Luan, who headed the AGI Lab, departed in February 2026.
Amazon consolidated its AGI activities under Senior Vice President Peter DeSantis in December 2025. DeSantis oversees a broader technology organisation that also includes Amazon’s custom silicon development and quantum-computing initiatives.
Artificial general intelligence generally refers to a theoretical AI system capable of learning and performing a broad range of intellectual tasks with human-level or greater ability. Amazon is among several major technology companies investing in advanced foundation models and autonomous AI systems.
Amazon continues to develop its Nova family of AI models while expanding generative AI services and infrastructure through Amazon Web Services. The company also designs custom Trainium and Inferentia chips for AI training and inference. The latest reductions indicate a realignment within Amazon’s AI operations rather than a withdrawal from the sector.
