Anthropic has signed a $35 billion cloud-computing agreement with Lambda, a cloud provider backed by Nvidia, to secure additional computing capacity for its growing artificial intelligence operations. The deal covers a data centre project in Nueces County, Texas, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The Texas facility is being developed by Hut 8, a company that has shifted from cryptocurrency mining into AI-focused data-centre infrastructure. The project will provide approximately 350 megawatts of capacity, which Lambda will use to deliver Nvidia-powered computing resources to Anthropic.
The agreement comes as demand for AI computing infrastructure continues to surge. Companies developing generative AI models are investing heavily in data centres and advanced processors to support the growing use of AI applications.
For Anthropic, the additional capacity is particularly important as the company expands products such as Claude and Claude Code, its AI coding tool. Anthropic has been aggressively securing computing resources to accommodate expected growth in demand for its AI services.
The Lambda agreement follows another major infrastructure commitment by Anthropic. The company said last week that it plans to spend $45 billion to rent AI cloud-computing capacity from Nscale’s data-centre campus in West Virginia. Together, the agreements highlight Anthropic’s efforts to secure large-scale computing infrastructure as it prepares for continued expansion.
The Lambda arrangement will bring additional Nvidia-based computing capacity online for Anthropic. Nvidia’s involvement is notable because the chipmaker has been expanding its role across the AI infrastructure ecosystem, including through support for specialised cloud providers that offer access to its GPUs.
The structure of the Texas project is also significant. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the deal, said Nvidia itself would hold the lease on the data centre. Hut 8 had previously disclosed in July that it had signed a 15-year lease with an unnamed investment-grade customer, with a base-term contract value of $19.6 billion. The Financial Times subsequently reported that Nvidia was the tenant for Hut 8’s 1-gigawatt Beacon Point campus.
Anthropic, Nvidia, Hut 8 and Lambda had not immediately responded to Reuters’ requests for comment outside regular business hours when the report was published. The $35 billion figure and details of the arrangement therefore come from a source familiar with the project rather than an official announcement from the companies.
The deal reflects the intensifying competition among AI companies to secure computing infrastructure. As model development and AI applications become more resource-intensive, access to large amounts of advanced computing capacity has become a strategic requirement alongside talent, data and model development.
For Lambda, the agreement represents a major opportunity to deploy Nvidia-powered infrastructure for one of the leading AI model developers. For Anthropic, it provides access to additional capacity without requiring the company to build and operate all of the underlying data-centre infrastructure itself.
The expansion also comes as Anthropic moves closer to a potential public-market listing and scales its commercial AI operations. Its growing infrastructure commitments demonstrate the significant capital and computing requirements associated with supporting frontier AI models and applications at scale.
