‘As Critical as Energy and Defence’: Michael Dell Highlights Global AI Infrastructure Race

At the Dell Technologies World conference in Las Vegas, Dell CEO Michael Dell underscored that nations around the world are intensifying efforts to build and expand their artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, likening these initiatives to the strategic importance of energy, communications, semiconductors, and defence. His remarks reflect a growing acknowledgement that AI systems — particularly data centres and high-performance computing hardware — are becoming core components of national competitiveness and technological leadership.

Speaking with the media during the event, Dell pointed out that major countries are actively investing in data centre expansion and compute infrastructure as part of their broader AI strategies. He emphasized that Dell Technologies is positioned to support these global build-outs, noting that the company has substantial capabilities in constructing large-scale computing facilities not only in India but worldwide. According to Dell, nations now view AI infrastructure as a sovereign priority, placing it alongside traditional strategic sectors such as defence and telecommunications.

“Every country is figuring that its AI infrastructure is just as important as its energy, communications, semiconductors, and defence… any strategic capability that a sovereign nation has,” Dell said during the conference, framing computational build-outs as essential assets in the emerging global AI economy.

His comments come amid India’s intensified push to attract cloud and AI infrastructure investments from global technology companies. Large tech firms — including Dell, Nvidia, and Google — have been signalling interest in expanding AI computing capacity in the region, recognising India’s vast talent pool, growing demand for AI services, and ambition to become a significant player in the global AI ecosystem.

The drive to fortify AI infrastructure has accelerated worldwide as countries seek to capitalise on the economic, scientific, and defence-related benefits that advanced AI capabilities offer. With data centres acting as the backbone of AI deployment, governments and industry players alike are prioritising infrastructure that can support complex models, high-volume compute workloads, and next-generation AI applications. This global push reflects a broader consensus that leadership in AI will be defined not only by software and algorithms but also by robust physical compute infrastructure — much like strategic investments in energy grids or defence systems.

In the context of enterprise adoption, Dell’s own AI products and partnerships showcased at the conference reinforce the company’s commitment to delivering infrastructure solutions that help organisations build and scale AI systems from on-premises environments to cloud-connected ecosystems.

As the global race for AI infrastructure intensifies, industry leaders and governments are increasingly aligning investments, policy frameworks, and strategic partnerships to ensure they are competitive in the evolving AI landscape — one in which infrastructure is viewed as indispensable to a nation’s technological and economic future.
