Bhavish Aggarwal’s Krutrim raises $50 mn, becomes India’s first AI unicorn – Start Up Pulse

Krutrim, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) startup founded by Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder and chairman of Ola, has secured $50 million in funding, valuing the company at $1 billion. Matrix Partners India and other investors led this round.

As the inaugural AI unicorn, Krutrim intends to utilize the investment to expedite its goal of transforming the AI sector and broaden its international presence, as stated by the company.

“India has to build its own AI, and at Krutrim we are committed to building the country’s first complete AI computing stack. We are thrilled to announce the successful closure of our first funding round, which not only validates the potential of Krutrim’s innovative AI solutions, but also underscores the confidence investors have in our ability to drive meaningful change for the world,” said Aggarwal.

Krutrim, meaning ‘artificial’ in Sanskrit, is set to be released in two variants: a foundational model named Krutrim, which has been trained on 2 trillion tokens and distinctive datasets, and a more expansive, intricate model dubbed Krutrim Pro, slated for launch in the upcoming quarter, aimed at providing advanced problem-solving and task execution capabilities.

With proficiency in 22 Indian languages, Krutrim has the ability to generate content in approximately 10 languages, including Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Odia, Gujarati, and Malayalam. During its launch, Aggarwal provided a glimpse of an AI chatbot powered by Krutrim, designed to perform tasks akin to those executed by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

Krutrim has undergone training on over two trillion tokens of data for Indian languages, with the base model encompassing roughly 20 times more Indic tokens compared to any other existing model. The Krutrim team operates across India and the Bay Area in the United States.

“Bhavish has consistently brought cutting-edge tech innovation to India at scale with Ola and Ola Electric – and now excitingly with Krutrim to power the ‘Viksit Bharat’ journey digitally. We are incredibly privileged to deepen our partnership with Bhavish and Krutrim,” said Avnish Bajaj, Founder and MD, Matrix Partners India.
