Coupang has announced investments exceeding $84 million in artificial intelligence startups globally, signaling its growing commitment to advancing next-generation technologies in logistics and commerce. The investments, made since 2023, are part of the company’s broader strategy to redefine global trade and strengthen its position as a technology-driven e-commerce leader.
A key focus of the initiative is the integration of AI and robotics into logistics operations. As part of this effort, Coupang is collaborating with Texas-based robotics startup Contoro to expand the deployment of AI-powered autonomous robots. The partnership includes plans to explore pilot programs at Coupang’s logistics facilities in Korea and other international locations, highlighting the company’s push toward automation at scale.
Contoro’s technology is designed to automate labor-intensive tasks such as unloading boxes from shipping containers and truck trailers. The robots use a human-in-the-loop system that combines artificial intelligence with human oversight, enabling remote operation and improving efficiency. The company claims a 99% success rate in unloading operations, demonstrating the potential of robotics to streamline global supply chain processes.
In addition to direct startup investments, Coupang has also committed $50 million to the SBVA Korea Sovereign AI Fund, matching another $50 million investment from the Korea Venture Investment Corporation. The company has previously supported nearly 20 Korean startups through its earlier investments, reinforcing its long-term approach to nurturing innovation across different markets.
The initiative aligns with broader international efforts such as the U.S.-Korea Tech Prosperity Deal, which aims to strengthen collaboration in advanced technologies and research. Operating in more than 190 countries and regions, Coupang is positioning itself as a bridge for global technological and economic cooperation, while leveraging AI and robotics to transform the future of commerce and logistics.
