Deep-Tech Aerospace Startup Alteon Raises $2.5 Million in Pre-Seed Round Led by Lachy Groom

Bengaluru-based deep-tech aerospace startup Alteon has raised $2.5 million in a pre-seed funding round led by investor Lachy Groom, with participation from Together Fund. The fresh capital comes shortly after the startup completed a flight test demonstrating autonomous flight within one metre of the ocean’s surface.

The recent flight test was aimed at validating a critical component of the manoeuvre underpinning Alteon’s autonomous, high-endurance flight technology. The company said the test helped reduce technical risk around its approach to autonomous dynamic soaring, an aviation technique that allows an aircraft to extract energy from wind gradients rather than relying continuously on conventional propulsion.

Alteon plans to use the newly raised capital to conduct offshore testing as it works towards achieving autonomous dynamic soaring without propulsion. The company also intends to scale its research and development efforts and eventually deploy a fleet of such aircraft over the ocean.

Founded in 2025 by Samay Sanghvi, Alteon is developing autonomous aircraft designed for ultra-long-duration flight. The Bengaluru-based startup’s technology is built around dynamic soaring, a technique inspired by birds such as albatrosses, which use differences in wind speed and direction at different altitudes to remain airborne for extended periods.

Alteon’s autonomous dynamic-soaring vehicles are designed to harvest energy from atmospheric wind gradients, with the long-term objective of enabling aircraft to remain airborne for months. One of the company’s key engineering challenges is enabling this manoeuvre autonomously while flying close to the surface of a moving ocean.

The startup plans to progressively test its aircraft’s ability to extract energy from wind until the vehicles can sustain flight without propulsion. If successful, the technology could enable a different approach to persistent aerial operations over oceans, where maintaining long-duration coverage can be difficult and expensive using conventional aircraft or other infrastructure.

Alteon sees potential applications for its aircraft fleets across weather and ocean-condition mapping, ship and fishing-activity tracking, critical-infrastructure monitoring, defence, search and rescue, and scientific and industrial operations. The company believes its systems could provide a continuous, real-time layer of capabilities over the ocean at a lower cost than alternatives such as ships, satellites and large offshore installations.

The funding comes amid increasing investor interest in India’s emerging autonomous aviation, aerospace and deep-tech ecosystem. Other startups in the sector have also attracted significant capital as investors look at technologies spanning autonomous flight, advanced aircraft and next-generation aerospace systems. Airbound, for instance, recently raised $37 million in a Series A round for its autonomous delivery aircraft.

For Alteon, the pre-seed round provides capital to move its technology from early flight validation towards more demanding offshore testing. The company’s immediate focus is on further demonstrating autonomous dynamic soaring and building the technological foundation required for a fleet of ultra-high-endurance aircraft.

The $2.5 million funding round marks an early but significant financing milestone for Alteon as it works to develop autonomous aircraft capable of sustained flight using energy harvested from the atmosphere.
