Google has announced a $15 billion investment to establish a 1-gigawatt AI data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marking its largest artificial intelligence facility outside the United States. The landmark project underscores Google’s growing commitment to strengthening India’s role in the global AI ecosystem and driving digital innovation across industries.
Announcing the development, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian emphasized the scale and strategic importance of the new facility, noting that it will “support AI-powered solutions across critical sectors in India.” The Visakhapatnam hub will join Google’s expanding network of data centres operating in 12 countries and will draw on technological advancements and research from its Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune operations.
Developed in collaboration with AdaniConneX and Airtel, the upcoming data centre will integrate TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) and GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) capabilities to power deep learning, neural network training, and large-scale AI model inference. The initiative is designed to strengthen India’s digital backbone while offering scalable infrastructure for enterprises and startups leveraging AI and machine learning technologies.
Gautam Adani, founder and chairman of the Adani Group, highlighted the national impact of the partnership, stating that the project will “accelerate AI-driven solutions in healthcare, agriculture, logistics, and finance, creating a robust ecosystem for India’s AI ambitions.” The collaboration aims to foster innovation, improve operational efficiency, and promote digital inclusion across diverse sectors.
The Visakhapatnam hub will also include a new international subsea gateway, featuring multiple subsea cables that will land on India’s eastern coastline. This addition is expected to significantly boost the nation’s global internet capacity and resilience. As part of the partnership, Airtel will play a key role in co-establishing the data centre and deploying both intra-city and inter-city fibre networks, enhancing India’s digital connectivity and providing low-latency, high-capacity data transmission.
Through this initiative, Google aims to reinforce India’s position as a strategic global hub for AI research, development, and deployment, while advancing its broader vision of sustainable, inclusive, and innovation-led growth in the digital era.
