Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Wednesday that India will establish a National Large Language Model to advance artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. He emphasized the need for the country’s private sector to stay ahead globally in this rapidly evolving field.
Government Initiatives to Boost AI and Innovation
Addressing a post-budget webinar on employment via video conferencing, PM Modi highlighted key government initiatives aimed at fostering startups and innovation. He mentioned the approval of a ₹1 lakh crore corpus fund to strengthen research and innovation in the country.
“The vision of investment in people stands on three pillars—Education, Skill, and Healthcare. Today, you are witnessing a major transformation in India’s education system after several decades. Significant steps like the National Education Policy, expansion of IITs, integration of technology into education, leveraging AI to its full potential, digitization of textbooks, and making study materials available in 22 Indian languages are all underway,” he stated.
Digitizing India’s Manuscript Heritage
Highlighting efforts to preserve India’s rich literary and historical heritage, PM Modi stressed the significance of the Gyan Bharatam Mission, which aims to digitize over one crore manuscripts. This initiative will contribute to the development of a National Digital Repository, providing scholars and researchers worldwide with access to India’s extensive traditional knowledge.
“The world awaits a reliable, safe, and democratic nation that can provide economical AI solutions,” the Prime Minister added, underscoring India’s potential to lead in the global AI landscape.
